Stone is the part of a garden that should outlast everything else in it, and it usually does not. Not because the stone fails, but because it was laid on sand with no haunching and moved in the first wet season.
What the work involves
- Compacted sub-base and bedding sized for what will walk or stand on it
- Steps set to a consistent rise, so people are not counting them with their feet
- Retaining built with drainage behind it, which is what holds a wall up over time
- Feature boulders set deep enough to look like they grew there
- Stone selected for grip when wet, since that is when people slip
We work with local stone where it suits the design. It costs less, it weathers to match the place, and replacing a cracked piece in five years is still possible.
