Native does not mean untidy, and it does not leave you without choices. It means the plant has already met the weather you are about to put it into.
What you actually save
A settled native planting wants watering through its first two dry seasons and very little after that. It is also less work in the other direction: things that evolved here are not constantly being eaten by the other things that evolved here, so you spray less and replace less.
Species worth knowing
For shade and scale, krishnachura and sonalu, both of which flower hard through April and May. For structure at eye level, ixora and kamini take clipping and still flower on the new growth. For ground that washes out, wedelia will bind a bank inside one wet season. For a balcony pot, hibiscus opens a flower most mornings for most of the year.
The part nobody mentions
Some natives are vigorous precisely because that is how they survive here. Wedelia crosses into a bed if you let it, and krishnachura needs eight metres of clearance that it will take whether or not you gave it. Match the plant to the room it actually has, not to the room in the photograph.
